10:00am HST - 10.10.10: Well it's been an interesting trip to say the very least. Started out awesome with some actual down time in the mornings where Welchy and I could play tennis for a good hour, you know just slugging the ball around. Then work all day, do set-ups for the events, clean the safehouse, document the athletes visiting to get fitted for the race and squeezing in training runs in the evening. But then on Friday when I was feeling good and had all my work done for the "Revealing of Fast Jacket" Media Party later that night, I went for a run from hell that Welchy suggested. I had no idea, just knew it was the way the Ironman World Championships ended back in the first few years the race happened on Kona. Well, Welchy did not mention that is requires a mile long run up a hill in the Kona heat and humidity at a 16% grade! Then your halfway point is in the lava fields out by the oceans edge, where you turn around and go back. When I got back I jumped right into the ocean to cool off, but in the process split my right foot wide open. Not wanting to risk "staff" infection and not thinking stitches were necessary I wrapped my foot and shot the race on Saturday with a huge gash in my right foot - which felt amazing - NOT! Needless to say I was in pain until I got home and went straight to see my main man, Dr. Bassil Aish, today. Who proceeded to tell me I was an idiot and my only choice of recovery in time for the marathon was to do two big loose stitches with no Anastasia. To say that hurt would be the understatement of the universe, never mind my drive home with two big stitches in the bottom of my right foot was quite the task for OC rush hour traffic on the 405 / 5 Freeway. Hopefully things get better, all I know is I definitely regret jumping in that ocean. On another note the 2010 Ironman World Championships were insane - Check out more of my photos here As well as the Revealing "Fast Jacket" Media Night - Matthew |
